2023 GKS End-of-Year Celebration

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), a cornerstone of Korea’s international education initiatives since 1967, has been instrumental in fostering global understanding and academic excellence. Currently supporting a cohort of 5,014 scholars, including 1,000 undergraduates and 4,014 graduates, the program annually attracts top talents from around the world to pursue degrees at Korean universities.

The celebratory event brought together over 200 GKS scholars, distinguished ambassadors, diplomats from 14 foreign missions, university officials, and program contributors for a night of recognition, performance, and networking. The GKS honored academic achievements, awarded outstanding students and institutions, and facilitated connections between scholars, universities, and alumni.

Among the celebrated scholars was Elena Smirnova, a master’s student at Jeju National University and a member of the Min Group Laboratory. Elena was a winner among GKS master’s students across the country, earning the prestigious Minister of Education Academic Excellence Award.

The event featured inspiring alumni stories, diverse performances, and socializing opportunities. The Ministry of Education and the National Institute of International Education aimed to expand the program, actively supporting scholars’ employment and integration in Korea to cultivate global leaders. Deputy Prime Minister Lee congratulated scholars, emphasizing that overcoming challenges abroad made them leaders in their fields.
